A slice of life from the past

This was a lovely experience. I was living in Boston at the time-circa 1986. I had just finished having some kind of spiritual meeting with some friends. A bunch of us were off to a little, quiet restaurant in Cambridge with dim lights. I had just bought a bottle of maple syrup that someone at the meeting had brought down from New Hampshire. He had made this maple syrup-tapped the tree and everything else that one does to get this sweet delight. I was happy to pay him the $10 for it. At the table after we ordered some food, I remember talking about this maple syrup-I was fascinated by its freshness and its finding its way to me. All of a sudden a man sitting at a table next to us or behind us I think said-I would love to have that kind of maple syrup. I said to him you can have this bottle as I can get another bottle next week at the meeting. He was so happy that I said that and he took it and paid me. He then said to me please be my guest next Saturday night at Peter and the Wolf at Jordan Hall. I said that I was unable to make as I had a prior commitment. He said then please come to a dress rehearsal. He introduced himself very modestly-I am Benjamin Zander. It turns out that at that time he was the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. He was charming. I went to the rehearsal and I learned so much. They played the introduction to Peter and the Wolf that is so familiar for one hour, over and over again. I had never seen experts practice anything before. I was used to seeing the finished product where they make it look almost easy. Sitting there listening over and over was quite an important lesson for me. It was such a pleasure meeting Benjamin Zander, who is originally from England.

  1. I really like the flow of this – how you’re at a spiritual meeting and then it turns into a maple syrup story and through it the meeting of someone charming. Interesting tale.
